From internal analytics to growth infrastructure

Sony Music was developing Apollo, its proprietary analytics platform, to generate deeper intelligence on Spotify artists and improve how artist development decisions were made across the organization.

The opportunity extended beyond reporting. Apollo needed new product capabilities, stronger data architecture, and middleware connecting Sony and Spotify systems so that artist information could become actionable across audience engagement, streaming performance, discovery, and monetization.

The mandate was therefore both strategic and technical: modernize Apollo while defining how the platform could create measurable commercial value. The team evaluated Sony’s existing data structures, artist information, analytics capabilities, and product architecture to identify where intelligence could be converted into better tools for artists and stronger economic outcomes for the platform.

A cross-functional team spanning data science, engineering, product, and design then developed a roadmap connecting predictive analytics, artist engagement, technology modernization, and product-led growth as components of one integrated system.

Designing intelligence around the artist

Rather than treating Apollo as a conventional internal dashboard, the platform was redesigned around the decisions artists and internal teams needed to make.

The architecture incorporated interconnected data streams across Sony, Apollo, and Spotify, supported by real-time data structures and clearly defined performance indicators. This created a more unified foundation for understanding streaming behavior, audience development, artist performance, and emerging opportunities across the catalog.

Product development extended across artist pages, streaming analytics, notifications, discovery and search, audience intelligence, and personalized data models. Advanced visualization prototypes translated complex information into usable interfaces, while search, personalization, and algorithmic analytics made the underlying intelligence increasingly actionable.

The resulting product architecture connected intelligence with engagement. Artist-facing tools were designed to help users understand their audiences, compare performance, monitor rankings, evaluate playlists, and manage their followings more effectively.

Behind those experiences sat a broader systems layer: middleware integration, real-time analytics, product engineering, visual design, and business intelligence working together rather than as independent technical initiatives.

From product intelligence to regenerative growth

The objective was not simply to modernize Apollo. It was to establish a system through which better data could continually produce better decisions, stronger artist engagement, and new opportunities for monetization.

That required building capabilities that could compound as usage and data increased.

The resulting architecture supported three consecutive years of 18–22% year-over-year revenue growth through Spotify Artists while establishing a broader foundation for continued product development.

More importantly, Apollo evolved from an internal analytics capability into a system in which data, product, and artist behavior could continuously inform one another. Each interaction generated greater intelligence; that intelligence improved the product; and the improved product created new opportunities for engagement and monetization.
